A Biblical Case for Church Membership

“Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.” Proverbs 18:1

It wasn’t until around 2 or 3 years ago that I became convinced that formal church membership is a Biblical teaching. In the following video, John Samson lays out a compelling case and I have heard no convincing response to this teaching.

In summary of the video: The “one anothers” found in Scripture can’t be fulfilled if you’ve isolated yourself. As followers of Christ, our lives should be built around the commands of Christ. God summons His people each Lord’s Day to gather together.

There is an “in the church” group of people and an “out of the church” group of people seen in Scripture. It is a definable group. There is clear and formal membership. Many of Paul’s words would be impossible to obey if there was not a way of knowing who is in and who is out.

Meeting together on the Lord’s Day should be the first thing on our calendar. It is not to be something that may be “squeezed in” depending on circumstances. This is the way God has appointed His people to live. Don’t reject it. Embrace it. It’s for His glory and our good.
