Heidi Baker & Bethel Redding

I’ve heard that the largest growing “stream” of Christianity is coming out of Bethel Redding & NAR. What do they teach?

The fruit of the Spirit is self-control. You don’t lose control. A loss of self-control is a sign of those demonized individuals we see in Scripture. So much of what passes as the work of the Spirit today is indistinguishable from the Kundalini cult, as the video above shows.

J.D. Hall was right. The foundation of what we see above is gullibility. Discernment is a gift of the Spirit. It is interesting how so many of those who claim to have the Spirit have no discernment at all.

It is one thing to watch many short videos like the video above. It is another thing to listen to hours of teaching coming out of this movement (which I have done). The biggest take-away I have from that experience is that I never heard the gospel proclaimed. It reminds me of what this man said….

“When miracles are emphasized – Jesus is denied.”

New Book by Todd Friel

I highly recommend Todd Friel’s new book “Judge Not” which deals with discernment and a ton of topics. He covers NAR, Youth Ministry, Jesus Culture, Short-Term Missions, and many other things. It is hard to put down, informative and thought-provoking.

Wine or Grape Juice?

Our pastor preached on Colossians 2:16-17.

“Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.”

One of the the things that occurred to me when he was preaching is that there are so many who have never heard a biblical view of alcohol.

(Scroll over the following verses and they’ll pop up automatically)

Luke 22:18, 7:34

Gen. 14:18

1 Timothy 5:23

Deut. 14:22-26

Ps. 104:14-15

Pr. 31:6

Of course there are strict warnings against drunkenness (Eph. 5:18 and others), but these passages do not teach that alcohol is strictly forbidden. After all….what did Jesus say to take in remembrance of Him?

Hint: It wasn’t grape juice.

Tongues for Everyone?

Robert Morris (the same man who says things like, “Your marriage is failing and your child is dying of cancer because you’re not tithing.”) says all believers can pray in tongues. Skip to 48 minutes in this program.

“Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues?” 1 Cor. 12:29-30

No.

The answer, is “No”.

What I sure don’t want to see is a new believer feeling a sense of guilt because he/she isn’t praying in tongues – all due to some false teaching he/she has heard which contradicts the Word. The sad reality is that there are many immature believers out there who are burdened with this teaching.

No More Hillsong

A fitting title would be, “Houston, we have a problem.” but someone already used it. During family worship time we have often used songs from Hillsong. There are a few songs by them that are good. There are a lot of songs that are really good if you change a lyric or two. What my wife and I can’t get over is Brian Houston. We’ve decided it’s for the best to cut anything that links back to him (until he repents). Why?

So many think Brian Houston is a leadership guru. Without integrity, there is no biblical leadership to be found.

“This is the kind of leadership that crucified Jesus.” – Chris Rosebrough

Hospital Visits

On Thanksgiving Day I had the opportunity to visit someone in ICU and to share the gospel briefly with them. They died a few weeks later. Hospital visitation is something you want to be prepared for. Don’t be caught off guard. It is one of the best moments to point people to the Perfect Savior.

On Calling God “daddy” & “papa”

I’ve heard many young women (and even a few men) refer to God as daddy or papa. “You know what daddy told me this morning?” “Yesterday, papa said …..”

Yes, I’ve only heard it from those who believe strong impressions are the voice of God but that’s another post.

Robbing Widows and Deceiving People

“And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” 2 Peter 2:3 ESV

“And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.” 2 Peter 2:3 KJV

I was without internet for several days. It is a weird feeling being in Southeast Asia without a smart phone and without wifi. War could break out between nations and you wouldn’t even know! Thankfully I’m reconnected now.

One of the first things I learned doing mission work in Asia was to be flexible! Western culture is time-oriented. Much of Eastern culture is event-oriented. You may be scheduled to speak somewhere and after all of your preparation the schedule may be changed 15 minutes before you speak. Or instead of an event being cancelled, you may often be put on the spot without any prior notice. I learned quickly to have messages on hand so that I would be prepared and it paid off several times. Running errands in the East is also very different from the West. You may have 3 things that you need to do and in the West you could check them off your to-do list before noon but in Asia those same three things may take all day. Someone joked, “Blessed are the flexible for they will not break.”

Praise God for another year to serve Him. There are many in the world like Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Bill Johnson. They are not shy about their false teaching. May we who have the truth not hold back but be willing to speak God’s Word. Call a fig a fig. Know your facts. If someone is teaching doctrines of demons then say so. Unless you speak, how will the multitudes of those who follow such individuals hear the truth?

“…how are they to hear without someone preaching?” Romans 10:14

Let’s point people to the real thing in 2016.

Discernment

The color of the church carpet? That’s pickiness.

Separating truth from error regarding what’s being taught? That’s discernment.

We are to test all things (1 Thess. 5:21) and go to the Word of God to see if what is being taught is truthful (Acts 17:10-11).

Chris Rosebrough said something to this effect: A church may say, “We believe in the Son of God.” That might be entirely different than teaching what the Son of God taught. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” There are so many churches that are in open rebellion to the very words of Jesus because they’re not teaching anything biblical, they’re just making it up, and slapping it on Jesus. They’re not teaching the truth. Saying you have allegiance to Jesus but not keeping and guarding His Word, not teaching sound doctrine, and not rebuking those who contradict it shows that you don’t have any real allegiance to Jesus except for lip-service allegiance.

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
